Moroccan Magic in Minutes

Want to make a room look like you've been on a trip to the markets of Marrakech without cleaning out your wallet? A few simple accent pieces can help you pick up the flavor of Morocco and leave you a little money left over to enjoy the fine cuisine that is an Moroccan specialty. Moroccan decor is known for its elaborate motifs and rich color schemes. Royal blues, vibrant reds, and deep purples are subtly mixed in with soothing neutrals like taupe and shades of white. Also important in Moroccan decors are the textures, the smoothness of tapestries juxtaposed with the roughness of hand-hewn chests and tables. While original handmade pieces shipped from Morocco may be a bit to costly for your budget, several affordably priced furniture stores offer pieces that capture the essence of Moroccan decor.

A good place to start on a budget is with lamps. Usually the rule is to avoid larger lighting fixtures like chandeliers in a small room because it tends to make the room seem shorter than it is. Since Moroccan furniture tends to sit lower to the ground though it may well be a plus. Wall sconces can add an exotic touch to a room without requiring the electrical work of installing a chandelier. Putting a tea light behind the sconce can eliminate the need to do any electrical work at all. Several retailers offer authentic sconces for under $50.

Accent pillows can spice up the furniture you already have. It's best if you are starting with solid color upholstery on the furniture. A few bolster pillows on a couch or chair will do much to liven up the space. You can stretch your dollar farther if you have a bit of seamstress in you by purchasing fabric and making the pillows yourself. For under a $100 you can make about 6 pillows (12" x 12") and the leftover fabric can be used to add a splash of color to a table. If you are inclined toward sewing simple curtains made from an appropriately-themed fabric can add character to a room.

Hardwood floors are great because they allow you to use area rugs to pick up the decor of a room and a Moroccan theme is no exception. Moroccan area rugs especially are virtually works of art and a few well-placed rugs will leave your guest with no doubts about the theme of your room. In fact, a Moroccan theme even opens up the option of hanging rugs on the wall for a very authentic feel. A traditional Moroccan kilim would make an excellent accent on any wall. Be aware that Moroccan areas rugs are usually handmade and great care should be taken in cleaning them to make sure that they are not damaged during the process.

It doesn't take a lot of work to change the theme of a room. With a creative eye and a little do-it-yourself spirit you can add a little exotic ambiance to any room in your home.
